Backend Python Developer

Role Summary

Risk Management Technologies (RMT) is looking for a motivated and capable Backend Python Developer to join our Data Engineering team.

Our flagship product, ChemAlert, is a chemical risk management platform that helps organisations manage chemical safety, compliance, and regulatory information.

This role will focus on developing and enhancing the backend services, data pipelines, APIs, and supporting user interfaces that power ChemAlert's data engineering capabilities.

You will work on our ChemAlert Data Engineering (CADE) platform, which is responsible for collecting, processing, validating, and distributing large volumes of data from diverse external sources, including regulatory authorities, scientific databases, and other industry information providers.

We are looking for a self-starter who enjoys solving complex technical problems, building reliable software, and using modern development practices, including AI-assisted tooling.

While the role is primarily backend-focused, you will also contribute to our React-based interfaces, so some frontend development experience is important.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

• Backend Development & API Integration
• Design, develop, and maintain backend applications and services using Python.
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs to support data processing, system integrations, and frontend applications.
• Develop integrations with third-party APIs, external databases, and other data providers.
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested, and reusable code.
• Implement appropriate error handling, logging, monitoring, and automated testing.
• Improve application performance, reliability, and scalability.

Data Engineering & Automation

• Develop and maintain automated data collection, transformation, and processing pipelines.
• Build solutions for ingesting data from APIs, websites, structured files, and other external sources.
• Develop data validation, cleansing, enrichment, and transformation processes.
• Troubleshoot pipeline failures, data inconsistencies, and performance bottlenecks.
• Work with relational databases and data storage systems to efficiently manage large datasets.
• Contribute to job scheduling, orchestration, and monitoring solutions.

Frontend Development

• Develop and maintain components within our React-based applications.
• Integrate frontend interfaces with backend APIs.
• Build intuitive interfaces for monitoring data pipelines, managing workflows, reviewing data, and supporting operational activities.
• Collaborate with other developers to ensure consistent, responsive, and maintainable user interfaces.
• Engineering Practices & Collaboration
• Use modern AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and problem-solving.
• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and solution design.
• Work with Docker and containerised development environments.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment processes.
• Collaborate with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve existing systems, processes, and development practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Core Skills & Experience

• Strong Python development experience and a solid understanding of software engineering principles.
• Experience developing and maintaining backend services and RESTful APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
• Experience working with relational databases, SQL, and data modelling.
• Experience developing automated data processing, ETL, or integration solutions.
• Working knowledge of React and JavaScript or TypeScript, with the ability to develop and maintain frontend components.
• Practical experience using Docker and containerised applications.
• Experience using Git and collaborative software development workflows.
• Demonstrated experience using AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar.
• Understanding of software testing, debugging, and application performance optimisation.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to independently investigate and resolve technical issues.
• Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to software development.
• Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working across different technologies.

Nice to Have

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

• Workflow and job orchestration platforms such as Apache Airflow, Mage.ai, or Prefect.
• PostgreSQL and other relational or analytical database technologies.
• Object storage systems and S3-compatible platforms such as MinIO.
• Web scraping, automated data collection, and document processing.
• Data quality monitoring, observability, and pipeline performance metrics.
• CI/CD tooling and DevOps practices.
• AI/ML integration, including document classification, information extraction, and automated data enrichment.
• Experience developing dashboards, operational monitoring interfaces, or workflow management applications.
• Experience integrating external regulatory, scientific, or industry datasets.
